“Sel d’Avlo” Project: An Innovative Initiative for Women’s Empowerment Led by Two Member Organizations of the URUNANI Africa Network
The “Sel d’Avlo” project, led by the associations "Échanges Solidarité", "Action+", and "Sterna Africa", is structured around three implementation areas — one main axis and two complementary ones — aimed at improving women’s working conditions and increasing salt production in the Avlo community.
Main Axis : Construction of Essential Infrastructure
The first and main component of the project focused on building key infrastructure to support women’s work and enhance salt production capacity. As part of this initiative, a large multifunctional building was constructed, including:
-
A meeting space dedicated to planning and organizing the women’s activities
-
A storage room for preserving the salt before commercialization
-
Nine furnaces used for salt processing and preparation
In addition, a water tank was installed at the entrance of the building to simplify the filtration of salt water. A canoe was also donated to facilitate transportation across the lagoon, enabling women to collect sand — the essential raw material used in the traditional salt production process in Avlo.
Complementary Activities
Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Workshop
This workshop was organized to raise awareness and educate women from the cooperative on menstrual hygiene and health.
Training Workshop on Cooperative Management and Administration
This session aimed to strengthen the management and administrative skills of cooperative members in order to support the long-term sustainability of their activities.
Reading, Games, and Educational Activities Workshop with Children from Avlo Primary School
This activity was dedicated to children from the Avlo primary school, creating a space for learning, creativity, and community engagement through reading and interactive games.
First Aid Training Workshop
This workshop aimed to teach participants essential first aid techniques, enabling them to respond effectively in emergency situations.
The “Sel d’Avlo” project reflects a strong commitment to women’s empowerment, community solidarity, and sustainable local development, while reinforcing the social and educational impact of grassroots initiatives led by members of the URUNANI Africa Network.
